Model vs mannequin?

I was going to write an Etailers Don't post about e-stores that only have one photo per product but I didn't have much to say beyond "it's not good enough". As I went through different websites for research I thought about how etailers decide to display their goods on sale. When it comes to fashion there are three options - use a model, dress up a mannequin, or create an "invisible mannequin" effect.

Before I compare the three options, I find the method used in creating an "invisible mannequin" pretty interesting. I thought they use some kind of wire frame to prop up the outfit, but instead it's done using a mannequin and some photoshopping.

As expected, they take a photo of the outfit on the mannequin, but what I didn't expect is that they also take a photo with the mannequin wearing the outfit back to front and inside out.

By photoshopping the two images together and removing the mannequin from the image you get this.

Pretty nifty isn't it?

Now back on topic. I'm going to use Diane von Furstenburg and her iconic wrap dresses to compare the three display options. First, the model. This is from the DvF website. Pretty simple, the model is doing her best impression of a mannequin.

Or the model can strike a pose or two.

From Shopbop

And from Bloomingdale's

The dress can also be part of a "look" (from Shopbop)

Some etailers use models but "chop off" the model's head to focus on the item on display (from Net-a-Porter).

Next up is the headless mannequin (from Zoe)

It's also favoured by The Outnet

The mannequin can be suitably accessorised too.

Last but not least, some choose to let the clothes do all the talking.

From Net-a-Porter

And The Outnet

So which method is the best? From a customer point of view it's nicest to see the outfit on a model, but it is the most costly option for the etailer (mannequin don't need make up, or payment for their service). The etailers save on makeup and hair when they opt for "headless models" shots, but I find it a bit strange to not see the face of the model.

The headless mannequins are somewhat creepy but if suitably accessories it can still create an interesting look. A skin-toned colour mannequin is much better than a grey one IMO - the latter looks too ghostly!

The "invisible mannequin" is the cleanest look as there is nothing else to distract your attention from the item on display, but somehow it leaves me a bit cold.

From an etailer's perspective, the biggest question is: Which method is most likely to make you buy the item on display?

Personally speaking, I don't think it matters. Despite my opinions above, if I like the item I'll get it regardless of how it is displayed. Well, that is my consciousness speaking. I don't know if a model is likely to subconsciously make me more likely to buy something.

Are you more likely to shop from websites that use models? Or do you favour the "invisible mannequin" look?

  • Models
  • Mannequins
  • "Invisible mannequins"
  • Doesn't matter

P.S. I really want a DvF dress now ...

What's in the box?

Fast as a flash I received by Shopbop order yesterday.

What lovely presentation!

Yay to my first Missoni purchase :-D

There are some gold sparkles in the zig zag scarf which weren't visible in photos on Shopbop, can you see them in the close up?

Here's a quick model shot.

I can't wait to wear it in winter!

And there are the Juicy Couture princess studs.

I must admit I didn't check the measurements so the earrings are smaller than I expected, which is fine - I was worried they they'd be too big!

Another self-portrait.

I asked The Duke to take this photo so you can see the lovely crown claw.

I'm really happy with my purchases and Shopbop sets the bar high for etailers. If you haven't bought from them before do yourself a favour and check them out :-D

Another Shopbop order

After a day of deliberation I decided to purchase the Missoni scarf. Given Sydney's weather I may be able to wear it sooner rather than later!

The scarf is $US99, so I was on the hunt for something small to quality for free shipping (yes it is a bit silly to "spend to save", but as I wrote in a previous post we're often irrational about free shipping).

And these are what I picked:

The Juicy Couture princess earrings (on sale for $US24) look nice front-on, but Shopbop's photos did not show off its unique feature.

Isn't the crown-shaped claw lovely? To be honest I'm surprised that Shopbop dropped the ball on the display photo (the photo above is from Endless). Endless also offers a 360-degree video of the earrings which is a bonus.

I do like the photo from Shopbop that gives you an idea about the size of the earrings. Trust me, I have purchased earrings online and surprised by their size when I receive them in the post!

I was almost going to buy this MBMJ Miss Marc Makes a Splash tee (on sale, $US47.60) but decided against it because *sob* I think I'm too old to wear a tee with a cartoon figure on it. One of you should get it though, it's so cute!

I also went on The Outnet (international site) last night and I really like the look of this MBMJ Jailbird cotton-twill dress.

It's cute and the price is tempting (down to £100.62). It's sitting in the "Most Wanted List" for now. What to you think?

P.S. The eBay directory is live! Let me know if you want to add your seller page :-D

Wrap me up

I'm such a sucker for Shopbop ads. I received their "new items on sale" e-mail and wasted no time checking it out over breakfast.

I've been thinking about a new scarf for winter. Specifically, a Missoni one. And lo and behold there is one with 50% off.

There is also a nice MBMJ scarf in the sale.

Both are $99.

Which one gets your vote?

ETA: Thanks for your votes so far!

There is another MBMJ scarf in the same collection which is a traditional long scarf. I think I prefer that because I like to wrap a scarf tightly around my neck.

I showed the scarves to my work buddy and she said she can knit something like the MBMJ one but not the Missoni one. That's a factor too.

Gah I'm so bad at decision making!

Etailers Do: Creative merchandising

Just like the window display at brick-and-mortar stores, the home page of an e-store is vital in attracting prospective shoppers. If an etailer can create content in the home page that engages its audience, they are more likely to explore, and some will eventually click on the "add to cart" button.

Shopbop's home page yesterday piqued my interest and I made a note to have another look.

The heading ("The Ultimate Closet"), the uncluttered display, the quality of the 14 pieces selected, and the prospect of playing mix and match ... what's not to like?

If I want to look at any of the items on display, one click and a dialogue box pops up with product details and I can buy it straight away.

I can also choose to "shop the lookbook" and see the stylist using the 14 items to create different looks.

It's like the mix and match features in magazines, with the added bonus of immediate purchase. Anything to show the versatility of an item gets a tick from me.

It looks like I'm not the only one who likes this "shop front" because a few of the items are sold out already.

How much are you swayed by what's on display at an e-store's home page?

Help me choose a crossbody bag!

I have a Marc By Marc Jacobs crossbody bag that I use to death.

After reader this post from In their Closet I thought I'll have a look around online for a new crossbody bag. And oh boy the choices out there are mind boggling. So I need your help.

In the cheap and cheerful corner (under $A100) we have:

From ASOS

From Fossil (via Endless)

With the strap

Another Fossil one

Or should I get my fourth MBMJ bag?

Via Endless

Via both Shopbop and Endless

In teal

or tan

And how about Kate Spade?

Via Endless

A bigger version

Via Nordstrom

I usually match my crossbody bag with a day dress or a cute top and jeans.

Ah, decisions decisions. Which one gets your vote?

And it was interesting to compare the four online stores. I'll write a post about it if you're interested - just say so in the comments.

Boxing day sales haul from Shopbop

I only had the public holidays off work this year. The silver lining is that I could take long lunch breaks and check out the Boxing Day sales. So on the 28th last month I headed off to Pitt St mall in Sydney to see if I can nab any bargains.

By the title of this post you may come to the conclusion that I left the shops empty handed. Well almost. All I bought were some heavily discounted toiletries at DJs. I had something specific in mind, but I didn't think it was going to be hard to find - a pair of simple, beige flats.

But I was wrong. I went to DJs, Myer, Nine West Witchery etc*, looked through all the stock (as you can imagine it was chaotic at times). There weren't that many options, and the ones I tried on didn't fit well. After almost 2 hours I gave up and went back to the office.

In frustration I went online that night. My first stop was Endless but I had no luck there either. Then I went to Shopbop, one of my favourite online stores. And these little puppies were waiting for me.

A pair of KORS Michael Kors embossed flats, 50% off (to $US97.50). And they have a pair left with my size. How can I say no?

Those of you familiar with Shopbop will know that they offer free express international postage for purchases over $US100 (otherwise it's $US10 so it's still reasonable). I don't know if you think the same way but I'd rather buy something else to push the total over $US100 than paying postage, so I added these cute Marc by Marc Jacobs stud earrings to the shopping cart ($US26.60 after 30% off).

Since I placed the order over the holiday period, I knew it would take longer than usual for the parcel to arrive. It ended up arriving at my office on 3 January, just under 1 week. Interestingly it stopped over in Hong Kong before arriving in Sydney, whereas previous parcels always travel directly from the US to Sydney. I wonder if it was because of reduced number of flights during that time of year.

So these are the shoes.

They match my criteria and the embossed leather gave them a bit of an edge.

This was the first time I bought a pair of closed-toe shoes online without trying them on IRL. It was a risk that I usually won't take, but the lack of options locally plus the big discount pushed me over the line. It was such a relief when I tried them on and they fit. Not a perfect fit, but good enough.

And the studs are just adorable.

Usually I'd take a photo with the earrings on but I may give them to my 8 year old niece instead.

As usual, the order was easy and hassle free. If someone is new to online shopping Shopbop is definitely one store I recommend.

Shopbop is so good (especially when on sale) that I have already placed another order (they were offering extra 20% off some sales items last week). When that parcel arrive I'll write a detailed review of the site.

Did you brave the shops at the sales or did you snap up bargains in the comfort of your own home?

* One logical place to go to for flats is Sambag but I am boycotting them because a pair of flats I bought there fell apart after I spent one day in the rain. Colour me unimpressed.
